❓ What is BLK Brighton?
BLK Brighton is a free, community-led platform centred by and for the Black community in Brighton & Hove and Sussex. We amplify Black-led initiatives, share resources, and create spaces for connection across culture, education, creativity, and wellbeing.
❓ Who is it for?
• Black students and staff at the University of Sussex and beyond.
• Black residents in Brighton, Hove, and Sussex.
• Black-led organisations, creatives, and businesses looking to connect with community.
•Other BIPOC groups and initiatives — while centred on the Black community, BLK Brighton is not a closed network and we welcome collaboration and mutual visibility with other marginalised communities.
• Allies and supporters who want to stay informed, share resources, and uplift Black communities, or advocate for collective liberation.
👉 BLK Brighton is a decolonial and intersectional platform — meaning our work recognises how race, gender, class, sexuality, disability, and other lived and embodied experiences intersect, and we actively centre inclusive approaches to knowledge, culture, and community-building.
❓ How does the Instagram page work?
• Living directory: The Instagram feed and stories work as a rolling advert board for local Black-led initiatives, events, and businesses.
• Collaborations: You can tag BLK Brighton in your posts, and we’ll share to amplify visibility. You can also make BLK a collaborator on your posts so they reach both your followers and ours.
❓ How does the Digital Calendar work?
• Ongoing submissions: The calendar is updated regularly with events, projects, and initiatives relevant to Black communities in Brighton & Hove, Sussex and beyond.
• Rolling directory: It’s more than just dates — it works as a hub where people can find events and projects to plug into throughout the year.
• Free to submit: Anyone can share events, workshops, or projects by sending us the details (flyer, date, time, location, link).
• Visibility: Events added to the digital calendar are also promoted on Instagram and shared with our networks.
